RESIDENCY Establishing residency in the state does not require living in Florida for a minimum length of time. You may file a Declaration of Domicile certifying that you live at a given address. For more information on establishing your residency, call 305-275-1155. TAXES Florida has one of the premium tax structures in the state. Residents pay no personal income tax or inheritance taxes. The government’s main sources of income are sales and property taxes. In Miami-Dade County the sales tax is 6.5%, but is not applicable to groceries or medical items. Florida homeowners may be eligible for a $25,000 exemption from real estate taxes on the assessed value of a home if it is their residence and if they meet certain other criteria. VOTER REGISTRATION To vote, you must show proof of Florida residency, be registered in Dade County, be a U.S. citizen, and at least 18 years old. Registration closes 30 days before an election. DRIVERS LICENSE To apply for a state driver’s license you will need: proof of Florida registration for your vehicle, out-of-state license and Social Security card. If you have a valid out-of-state license and a violation-free driving record, you only need to pass a vision test. If there are offenses against your license, or if you are applying for your first license, a written exam based on the Florida Driver’s Handbook and a driving test are also required. Your first Florida license is valid for six years. For more information call 305-246-6347. Florida law requires that all front seat occupants of motor vehicles use seat belts. Any child five years or younger must be protected by a federally approved child restraint device appropriate to the age of the child. MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION To register your car you will need a current driver’s license, proof of no-fault automobile insurance, prior registration certificate, auto title and a valid emissions inspection certificate.
