Homestead Historic DistrictHomestead is becoming renown as the "Antique Capital of South Florida," but that moniker belies the diverse array of shops in the area. You can spend a day exploring the wealth of the eclectic antique and thrift shops on Krome Avenue or enjoy the abundance of choices at a nearby mall. Whether you’re looking for bargain basement or upscale attire, the Homestead/Florida City area offers shops that cater to every taste and pocketbook.

The Homestead Historic District is a great place to hunt for antiques or unique gifts. Krome Ave., designated a Historic Florida Main Street, features around thirty antique shops and art galleries. Washington Avenue, also considered part of the historic district, has eclectic shops that feature collectibles, local art, pottery, stained glass, antiques and many unique items.

Florida Keys Factory ShopsThe Florida Keys Factory Shops (248-4727), located at 250 E. Palm Dr. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and the Florida Turnpike in Florida City, is a manufacturer’s outlet center with more than 50 stores and a food court. This extensive shopping complex features fine merchandise at low prices, including LA Gear, Van Heusen, Bugle Boy, Geoffrey Beene, 9 West, Corning Revere and other top-name brands with even more outlet stores opening through 1998. The atmosphere reflects Tropical South Florida’s Spanish heritage with Mediterranean architecture, water fountains, mosaic and terra cotta tile accents. This outlet center provides approximately 1,000 jobs in the area.

The Cutler Ridge Mall (235-8800 or 235-8562), located at 20505 S. Dixie Hwy. at the intersection of US 1, Caribbean Blvd. and the Florida Turnpike in Miami, features over 100 specialty shops along with Sears, JCPenney, Burdines and more. On US 1 at S.W. 136th St. in the Kendall area is The Falls (255-4570). This extravagant mall includes Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s’, along with over 60 upscale shops, including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and The Polo Store. The Homestead Towne Square Shopping Center, located at US 1 and Campell Dr. in Homestead features food stores and other specialty shops. A Mexican shopping quarter features delectable foods and unique novelties.
